PALM ISLAND FLORA
Is typical of dry low tropical islets. (dry because low)
Most of the primary vegetation of the hills has been probably burnt end of 18th century to produce lime from corals. Low parts were originally just swamps and bushes, and have been cleaned by John Caldwell during many years, then by the new owners.
Palm trees represent the huge majority of Palm Island actual vegetation.
They were only five when the Caldwells settled here.
Most of them have been planted, from the coconuts of the original trees. Last survey counted 1852 of them
Others species of Palm trees have been recently introduced
Curiously, there is still one cotton tree in Palm.

Is it the last survival of an old cotton plantation?
